What is a technical animation?

A technical animation is a visual explanatory video that shows how a product, machine, installation, or software works. Instead of long documents, an animation illustrates the essence step by step, with control over what you do and don't show. This makes complex operations, tolerance, safety, or maintenance immediately understandable for customers, partners, and colleagues.

Consider product launches, tender presentations, trade shows, or e-learning, where clear 3D visualization makes all the difference. Read also The power of technical animations in industry. Specifically for construction: Technical 3D animations for the construction sector.

Benefits of a technical animation

  • Focus on the core: show exactly the parts and steps that matter.
  • No prototype needed: present before production with renders from your CAD model.
  • Convince faster: shorten sales cycles with a clear explanatory video.
  • Safe and scalable recordings: everything digital, no shooting days or downtime.
  • Reusable assets: stills, snippets, and loops for web, social media, and trade show displays.
  • Easy variation: quickly customize languages, color variants, or modules.

Our working method

Our approach to technical animations provides clarity about the process and expectations in advance. Typical turnaround time is 3 to 6 weeks for 60 to 90 seconds, depending on complexity, number of variants, and simulations required. We schedule multiple feedback rounds and work transparently, so you maintain control over planning, scope, and quality.

  1. Intake and goal setting: target group, use case, channels, and KPIs clearly defined.
  2. Script and storyline: we simplify the core message into a logical narrative.
  3. Style direction: mood board and style frames for 2D or 3D look and feel.
  4. Storyboard and animatic: shots and timing clear in advance, including feedback round.
  5. 3D production: CAD cleanup, modeling, rigging, shading, lighting, and simulations.
  6. Animation and finishing touches: motion, typography, callouts, voice-over, and sound design.
  7. Delivery: customized versions for web, sales, trade shows, and social media, plus stills and short cutdowns.

2D, 3D, and working with CAD files

We build directly on your technical data. We often start with STEP or other CAD files, clean up models, and enrich them with materials, lighting, and realistic movements. No CAD available? Then we model based on references or prototypes. Depending on the goal, we choose photorealistic 3D or a 2D motion design style that quickly explains the core.

  • STEP/STP, IGES, Parasolid X_T, SolidWorks — Preferred for 3D animation and accurate geometry
  • OBJ/FBX — Interchangeable meshes for visualization
  • PDF/DWG/DXF, photos — Reference for dimensioning and modeling without CAD

Costs of a technical animation

Every technical animation is custom-made. The investment depends on factors such as:

  • Duration of the video and number of variants or languages.
  • Complexity of CAD cleanup, photorealism, and simulations.
  • Style choice: 2D motion design or 3D cinematic look.
  • Voice-over, subtitling, and sound design.
  • Versions for channels such as websites, trade shows, and social media.
  • Lead time and available input.

After a brief intake, we will share a clear proposal with scope, planning, and deliverables. No surprises afterward, just maximum clarity and quality. Want a quick insight into the budget? Request our price list.

Confidentiality and NDA

We handle sensitive information with care. Signing an NDA is possible, and data is exchanged and stored securely. We only share models and renders with your permission, and we take into account what may or may not be shown externally.

Delivery and formats

  • Video: MP4 H.264 or H.265, ProRes on request, variants in 16:9, 1:1, and 9:16.
  • Stills and key visuals: high-resolution PNG or TIFF.
  • Social snippets and loops: short versions for LinkedIn, Instagram, and stock market screens.
  • Audio: voice-over in multiple languages, music and sound design, SRT subtitles.
  • Branding: fully compliant with your corporate identity and brand guidelines.

Applications and possibilities

  • Product animation for complex technology and 3D visualization for high-tech and mechanical engineering.
  • Process animation for logistics and industry, such as sorting lines and AGVs.
  • Software explanations with UI animations and data flows for SaaS and embedded software.
  • Exploded views, see-through and cross-sections to show the inner workings.
  • Simulations of fluid flows, air, collisions, or packaging flows.
  • Safety, maintenance, and training with step-by-step instructions via an instructional animation for assembly and training.

Example: for Vanderlande’s FASTPICK, we visualized the entire logistics process, from intake to order processing, so that decision-makers could quickly see the added value. A concrete example is our Air Liquide – Blending Tolerance case. Also relevant: NXTGEN Hightech – Smart Industry case.
