Why a software tutorial animation works

Software is becoming increasingly powerful—and, as a result, more complex. Users want quick answers to questions like, “What should I do?” and “Why isn’t this working?” A tutorial animation brings structure to your explanation. You show the right steps in the right order, without any distractions. Do you mainly want to explain what your software is and why it’s valuable? Then an explanatory animation is a better fit. A software tutorial animation, on the other hand, is all about: how do you use it?

A software tutorial animation helps you:

  • help users become independent more quickly
  • reduce repetitive support requests
  • provide consistent explanations to everyone (both internally and externally)
  • to roll out new features smoothly
  • make training scalable

What is a software tutorial animation?

A software tutorial animation is an instructional animation that guides a user through a task or workflow. Examples include: creating an account, exporting a report, adjusting a setting, submitting a request, or inviting a team.

The difference from other forms of animation:

  • An animation tutorial focuses on actions and steps.
  • Product instructions typically cover (physical) use, assembly, or different versions. For more information, see " Have a product instruction animation created."
  • For complex UX flows or abstract dashboards, using motion graphics is often a strong stylistic choice (typography, highlights, callouts, and data visualization).

Applications for onboarding, training, and support

Software tutorial animations work best when you use them at points where users get “stuck” or where your organization has to repeat the same explanation over and over again.

Common applications:

  • Onboarding new users (first login, first task, first success)
  • Training for teams (sales, operations, finance, support)
  • Help Center modules by topic (short micro-tutorials)
  • Feature updates and release communications
  • Internal knowledge transfer (processes in tools such as CRM/ATS/ERP)
  • Customer communication regarding changes to screens, buttons, or workflows

Is your interface complex, or do you want to visualize certain screens in 3D (e.g., a device or a hardware-software combination)? In that case, this can be effectively combined with 3D animation.

Our working method

  • Just like with our other animations, we keep the process streamlined and organized so that you have control over the content, schedule, and quality.
  • Intake & Objectives: We determine who will be watching, what the viewer should be able to do afterward, and where the tutorial will be used (onboarding, support, training, release).
  • Script & flow structure: We arrange the steps in a logical sequence, write concise text, and determine where highlights or callouts are needed.
  • Storyboard / style frames: You can see in advance what the tutorial will look like: pacing, styling, icons, cursor movement, labels, and key moments.
  • Production (animation): We build the tutorial animation in modules. This is useful if you want to expand it later or make updates.
  • Delivery & versions: You will receive the master file and, if you wish, additional versions tailored for different channels (e.g., short clips for each feature).
